Ideas that started life in science fiction have steadily made their way into reality, first as technical concepts inspired by their fictional sources, then as prototypes and finally as real-life products. Throughout this process, the constraints of reality – practicality, social acceptance and even trends – have shaped these ideas into things that can work for the world we live in, until finally the real-life future of today takes form.
